The 3PMSF marking is one of the most important symbols you will see on winter and some all-season tyre models. It helps indicate whether a tyre has been properly tested for use in snow conditions.
What is 3PMSF
3PMSF stands for a mountain symbol with three peaks and a snowflake in the centre. This marking confirms that the tyre has passed specific tests on snow-covered surfaces.

Is the 3PMSF marking mandatory in Latvia during winter
Yes. In Latvia, during the winter period from 1 December to 1 March, passenger vehicles with a total weight up to 3.5 tonnes must be equipped with winter tyres marked with the “mountain and snowflake” symbol. Tyres marked only with M+S without the 3PMSF symbol are not permitted for road use during this period.
Why it matters
Not all tyres with a general-purpose or seasonally flexible design are equally suitable for winter. The 3PMSF marking helps distinguish tyres that have actually been tested in winter driving conditions.
Does 3PMSF mean a full winter tyre
Not always. Many all-season tyres carry the 3PMSF marking, but in very harsh winter conditions, dedicated winter tyres are usually still the safer choice.
When 3PMSF is especially useful
- when choosing all-season tyres for winter use
- when comparing different tyre models with similar positioning
- when looking for a simple indicator of snow performance
What to consider beyond the marking
In addition to the 3PMSF symbol, it is important to consider tread design, brand reputation, wet grip rating, and the conditions in which the tyres will be used daily. During winter in Latvia, also remember the minimum tread depth requirement for winter tyres of 4 mm.
