Tyre guide

What to do if a tyre is losing air

Pressure loss does not always mean an immediate catastrophe, but it is almost always a sign that the tyre, valve, or rim should be inspected more closely. Prolonged driving with a tyre that is losing air increases the risk of damage and safety issues.

Possible causes

  • a nail, screw, or other small puncture in the tread
  • a damaged valve or valve core
  • a sealing issue between the rim and the tyre
  • sidewall damage or deformation

What to do first

Check the tyre pressure and monitor how quickly it decreases. If the drop is significant or visible damage is present, it is best to stop driving and have the tyre inspected at a service centre.

Why simply reinflating is not enough

If a tyre repeatedly loses air, the problem will not resolve on its own. Moreover, prolonged driving with insufficient pressure causes heat buildup and can damage the tyre structure.

When a tyre is no longer safely repairable

Not every type of damage can be repaired. If the damage is on the sidewall, a bulge has formed, or the tyre is severely damaged, replacement is usually the safest solution.

How to prevent the issue from recurring

  • check tyre pressure regularly
  • inspect the tread and sidewalls
  • respond to TPMS warnings
  • check the rim condition after impacts
